Hey friends, this is the second devlog of Mega Maze Wars!
In our recent devlog we shared our game idea and talked about sheeps. This time, we will talk about Pixels and Maps!
What do you mean by Map?
We are working on a 2D strategy game for mobile devices. There must be maps, or to be more precise for us it’s mostly the design of the world.
For this we will use a tilemap, which is basically an Excel Sheet filled with numbers and these numbers are mapped to a graphic tile. In our game, these map tiles have a size of 64x64 Pixel.
We are experimenting with graphics currently.
The screenshot of our development environment shows a dummy tilemap which contains 3 layers. A dirt layer (brown), a grass layer (green) and a layer with some stone details (grey).
The Map in the game
For now there are no plans for generative or randomized maps. At this moment the idea is simply to add it with a decorative character. In fact we have the opinion that different map sizes for example wouldn’t be a positive feature for the game and the experience of the players.
We are thinking about giving players the option to choose their map style. This way you can play in your favorite setting. What do you think about that?!
Also the tilemap is centered withing the game screen. An open task contains the research for ideas of what we can add to the black areas that are visible around the tilemap in the screenshot.

First idea was adding decorative elements around our tilemap. This could be castle walls, forrests, lava.
